Where is the best place to live in Glasgow?

I have recently moved up to Glasgow and I am living in the West End. I am looking to move to a nice area where I can park my car safely and commute to work in the Pollcok Shaws area, are there any new flats or other developments that offer this kind of service for a reasonable ~ £400 rent?

im currently a student, who is planning to move into my own flat with my partner, he is not a student,the rent is £395 a month and the being a student i need to know every single shilling that will be wanted from me so i really dont have a clue what is meant by ”the bills and council tax are low’ – the flat is in glasgow almost city centre, anyone with examples of their own bill paymets would be GREAT!

Your landlord should be able to tell you how much the council tax will be monthly, as far as your electricity, gas , well that will depend on how much you use. You need to work that one out yourself. If it is a card meter then you should be able to judge what you use weekly, and same with the other. If your partner is employed then his wages will be taken into account if asking for a council tax rebate (as you are a student, you may be considered for one) I would ask at the council tax office where you stand. No harm in asking about a rent rebate either. Contact your local DSS they should be able to tell you more. Good Luck.

Mutual exchange of flats, help?

I have a Glasgow housing association flat, 2 bedrooms, been here for 6 months and get housing benefit so rent is always paid on time.
I know someone who is also with GHA, 2 bedroom flat, rent always paid on time, in a different area.
We were wanting to know if we could exchange/swap houses?
And if so, how we go about doing this?

I did this before (9years ago, things may have changed).

Ring your housing association. Im sure that this wont be a problem as your not up/down grading – Simply moving area.

Give them a ring. Things will become clear.

i am looking for a flat to rent i cant be bothered staying here in my house with my parents there always bugging me and in the flat i can relax do what i want instead of here price not to much im a student

As a student with no guaranteed income beyond your student loan, few landlords are going to be willing to let a flat to you unless you can come up with a guarantor – somebody who will agree to be legally responsible for paying your rent if you can’t or don’t. It’s also very unlikely you’d be able to afford to live on your own on a student budget. Have a look at rental prices in your area: http://www.findaproperty.com

Your best option is to look for a room in a shared student house, or find some flatmates you could look for a place with. If you don’t know anybody who you could move in with, the student services department at your university usually keeps a list of landlords who rent rooms to students, and if you look on notice boards at university you’ll often find ads from other students looking for a new flatmate.

funny story about paisley,pulled a bird in glasgow one night,and she said lets go back to mine.ok i thought we jumped a taxi and said to the driver were going to faithly(up by clydebank)we were going up the moterway towards paisley then the taxi pulled into paisley,he went out his way about 15 mile the stupid twat cause he misheard.whydo you want to move there its a dump up there.

Looking for a flat to rent or buy in Glasgow? Dont consider Kingston Quay/Wallace Street Glasgow.

The building is located in the Tradeston area of Glasgow, near the city centre. The building is poorly managed, anti-social behaviour and vandalism are rife, flats/cars not secure in secure underground car park, crime is widespread and you pay for this privilege!!

Kingston Quay/Wallace Street, Glasgow was finished off to a poor standard cheap plastering that doesnt even extend beyond the second floor (of a 7 storey building), car park that is not secure and floods when raining, lifts that are not fit for purpose, entry system that doesnt work most of the time and security doors that take about a week to close letting any old junkie, mugger or waster come in and see if they can break into your flat! THIS IS NOT LUXURY. The place is decorated similar to any Holiday Inn Express. The main difference being that at the Holiday Inn Express you know that its unlikely for your fellow guests to out of their windows, vomit in the hallways and generally treat the building like their very own toilet.

Kingston Quay/Wallace Street, Glasgow is often advertised as a luxury development with flats to rent or buy coming to market often. DO NOT be tempted to move here. There are hundreds of better flats to rent or buy in Glasgow. Dont waste your money and subject yourself to the of living here.

Dont be tempted by the spin of letting agents do not rent a flat at Kingston Quay, Wallace Street, Glasgow. Dont be tempted by cheap flats at auction due to repossession do not buy a flat at Kingston Quay, Wallace Street, Glasgow. Look elsewhere and save yourself a lot of hassle.

What are the good areas of Glasgow city center and westend to rent a flat?

Im looking to rent a flat in the city center (preferably within walking distance to the city center) or somewhere near by. Maybe the west end, near Glasgow green,high street, ingham road. Or just on the other side of the river. Or! the west end.

What are these places like? Want to be sure that im going to feel safe walking down the road at night, i.e staggering back from the pub!

City centre is a bit of a mixed bag; it’s had a lot of redevelopment in the last few years so there are some really smart apartments available. Then again there’s always some trouble kicking off on Sauchiehall Street after midnight, and there are some pretty dodgey parts near the railways stations. I lived on Cowcaddens Road for a few months a couple of years ago and had no problems. It was nice to be in the middle of things.

In general the "nice" places to live are in the West End in the area around Byres Road, the Botanic gardens and the Great Western Road. There are some areas around there that are as nice as any city in the world…took me by surprise as I wasn’t expecting it in Glasgow!
